You’ll be staying in the peaceful green neighbourhood of Watergraafsmeer; the name can be translated into ‘Water Canal Lake’ and the story behind it is that it’s a polder – a reclaimed land pumped dry and adapted to residential use. It is also the lowest-lying area of Amsterdam. It used to be a home to many impressive estates built by rich Amsterdammers in the 17th and 18th century, and the nearby Park Frankendael is the only remaining example of those times.
You should definitely visit it to enjoy its romantic setting, gaze upon its amazing architecture, admire its blooming greenery, and – of course – check out the marvellous Restaurant De Kas in the beautiful suroundings of the park (who grow food in their own greenhouses!). Other noteworthy eating establishments are Merkelbach (also in the park) and Cafe Restaurant Dauphine (a bit to the west), but you will probably find some other smaller friendly places when exploring the district.
A bit further to the east you’ll find Amsterdam Science Park – a stately work of futuristic architectonic art, and a nice contrast to the otherwise ‘naturally-themed’ neighbourhood. If you head west, in turn, you’ll reach the picturesque bank of Amstel river, and if you follow it to the north, you’ll get a chance to take a nice walk along the city’s main ‘canal’, which will take you to the heart of Amsterdam with all of its major highlights. But be vigilant – some nice attractions hide on both sides of the river as well!
